Anyone who knows me knows I have a sweet tooth. I love chocolate - cake, cookies, cupcakes…and I love ice cream . But I found that they don't love me, at least not when I eat them in excess. I have been getting migraines and my allergies (though environmental) have been getting worse. Since I spring cleaned my house, I thought my body could use a good spring cleaning.
The one thing I know for a fact…diet can cure most any ailment. If you don't believe it, read Fork Over Knives. Heart disease, diabetes, all cured with a clean diet and exercise. With this knowledge I set out on a journey of recharging my body.
Here's a little about the journey...
I felt fine. Until 11:00 p.m. I thought I was going to get sick everywhere (trying to think of PC way to say vomit - oh, well, there you go!!) I had an accountability partner, so that made it a lot easier. Plus S3 (my 14 year old) became a watch dog. Remind me to never let him be a part of my reindeer games.
For the most part I was fine, but during periods of the day I was weak and lethargic. Several sentences didn't make sense as they stumbled out my mouth...thank goodness I didn't have any work related meetings. At no time did I feel hungry. Just yucky - you know the feeling. By 9:00 p.m. I boiled and ate the best egg ever. It had a smoky flavor, it was juicy, crunchy and so satisfying (yes, I was delirious) . Don't worry S3 had me confess my sin (the eggtastic meal I had)! All I could think - twenty-seven more hours.
After the confession and the soul satisfying boiled egg I then started to work through why this was so hard...
I'm not just addicted to sugar. I'm addicted to the whole process of eating. I missed cooking, I missed textures, spoon to mouth, everything.
My stomach was much flatter. I had more energy than I'd had in weeks..and wait.. WHAT? It came to me, I hadn't had a sugar induced headache in three days. I hadn't taken allergy medicine in three days and my sense of smell was off the charts (particularly for food).
I make no testament to the fact that this will happen as quickly for you. Remember even though I love sugar, I never eat meat, rarely eat seafood and a midnight snack can be an apple or a bell pepper. So, I was almost there.
It may take a little longer for you to see results based on where you start. PLEASE DO NOT attempt this type of juicing fast without a doctor's recommendation. ESPECIALLY if you are on medication. On top of eating fairly clean, I take no meds.
Isn't she pretty?
I bought a lot of veggies - collards, spinach, broccoli, celery, carrots, tomatoes, cabbage and beets. And a variety of fruits - lemons, apples, plums, pears, grapes, pineapples and mangos. And big ole hunk of ginger and two bunches of parsley. I came up with 16 very delicious combinations. To be shared in a later post.
Make sure you go heavier on the vegetables than the fruit. This is not a diet plan, it's a plan to jump start positive eating habits. If you drink too much - I went for 64 − 80 ounces per day - you can gain wait and may feel bloated. You can also do your body more harm than good if your primary source is fruit.
The best site I've found for nutrition calculations is https://juicerecipes.com/.
Because I was doing this for three days I made juice in batches and put them in mason jars in my fridge. They do loose some nutrients, but if you don't prepare to succeed you often prepare to fail.
2 Medium Gala Apples
2 Celery Stalks
2 Inches Ginger
5 Medium Carrots
The Ruby Red Sipper
2 Medium Red Beets
2 Medium Stalks Broccoli
2 Inches Ginger
1 Medium Gala Apple
1 Small Plum
Thoroughly wash all fruits and vegetables. If you don't buy organic, use apple cider vinegar to rid your fruit of potential pesticides, then rinse well. You can leave the skin on everything - including the ginger. Place items in your juicer, I use a #Breville, and enjoy.
